Welcome to the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics
It is with a profound sense of history, responsibility, and vision that I welcome our distinguished community—staff, students, alumni, collaborators, and friends of the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics.
Since its establishment in 1962 within the Faculty of Science, our Department has been more than an academic unit; it has been a foundational pillar of the intellectual tradition of Great Ife. Physics, in both its pure and applied forms, remains the language through which humanity interrogates nature, and here at Ife it has been pursued with rigour, clarity, and distinction.
From its early years, the Department cultivated a culture of excellence, intellectual audacity, and global engagement. It attracted distinguished scholars from across the world, creating a vibrant academic environment that challenged assumptions and upheld the enduring ethos that only the best is good enough. This tradition has produced not merely graduates, but thinkers equipped to shape disciplines, institutions, and nations.
The evolution into a Department of Physics and Engineering Physics reflects a long-standing vision. The introduction of Engineering Physics in the 1970s anticipated the interdisciplinary demands of modern science, bridging nuclear science, materials physics, electronics, and environmental applications. In doing so, the Department played a catalytic role in the development of engineering disciplines within the University.
The 1970s and 1980s marked a golden era characterised by strong infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, and pioneering research across several fields. Although subsequent decades presented challenges—ranging from limited resources to infrastructural decline—the Department has remained resilient. Sustained by dedicated staff and strengthened through international collaborations, it has continued to produce scholars of global relevance.
Today, we stand at a defining moment. We inherit a distinguished legacy, yet we face a future that demands innovation and renewal. The frontiers of physics now extend into quantum technologies, advanced materials, climate science, nuclear applications, and data-driven modelling. Our task is not only to participate in these developments but to help shape them.
Our vision is clear: to consolidate our strengths in core areas while expanding into emerging fields, to revitalise our laboratories and research infrastructure, and to invest in our greatest asset—our people. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders, strengthening global partnerships, and positioning the Department as a competitive hub for high-impact research and innovation.
I call on our alumni to partner with us in this next phase through mentorship, collaboration, and support. To our students, you inherit a proud tradition and a future of immense possibilities. To my colleagues, we bear both a legacy and a responsibility—to preserve excellence and to advance it.
The story of Physics at Ife continues to unfold. With shared commitment and vision, the future will not only reflect our past achievements but surpass them.
Great Ife is not just a place—it is an enduring idea.
